Summerside Tomorrow

Summerside is a City that holds tight to its history and uses its lessons to forge ahead. The following are some ways Summerside is planning for a successful future.

New Waterfront

Plans are in the works for the City’s waterfront, including live-work buildings, additional green spaces, and more integration with the downtown area. A consultant has been working on a 25-year plan to overhaul the City’s port, and the plan will be focused on residents with business space, more public boardwalks, and a redesigned Holland College campus.

Open Innovation Ecosystem

Summerside is widely recognized as a leader and early adopter of green technologies. Our unique municipally-owned infrastructure, combined with a business environment that encourages innovation, distinguishes us from other communities in Atlantic Canada.

A commitment to sustainable development and technologies is a driving force in the policies of the City of Summerside. Our businesses and residents expect it. Sustainability makes both fiscal and environmental sense. It is a pillar of our approach to renewable initiatives and economic development in our community.

Some of our many green initiatives include:

  • A State-of-the Art Wind Farm
  • Energy Efficiency & Smart Grid
  • A Fleet of Electric Vehicles
  • Green Building Practices
  • Eco-friendly Waste and Water Treatment

Using the infrastructure we already have in place, a variety of potential applications could be developed and tested in a real live environment here. Some that would resonate with existing properties would be:

  • Electric storage and grid integration
  • Electric vehicles (including bus and passenger vehicles)
  • Electric car charger solutions with battery storage
  • Security and surveillance
  • Appliance control
  • Smart home innovation
  • Medical home care solutions
  • Solar energy integration
  • Bio fuel from waste
  • Advanced IT development

In 2009, recognizing that the demand for electricity would escalate as the municipality grew, and that dependency on imported oil was subject to escalating world prices and environmentally unsustainable, the City of Summerside opened its own wind farm. At present, Summerside Electric’s wind‐powered generation supplies 12 megawatts of power, providing 100% of the City’s nightly needs and approximately 50% its daytime needs. As a result, Summerside Electric is achieving total surplus wind energy, specifically during the nighttime.

Summerside’s aerospace industry continues to reach new heights, contributing to Prince Edward Island’s diverse economy. Some of the best-known names in aerospace have chosen to do business in Prince Edward Island. Honeywell Engines Systems and Services, StandardAero (formerly Vector Aerospace), MDS Coating Technologies Corporation, TubeFab Inc., and Tronos Canada Inc. all have operations in Summerside. We expect this industry will only continue to grow into the future.

The contribution of the information technology sector to the GDP on Prince Edward Island from 2009 - 2013 increased over 60% faster than the overall GDP growth. The sector now contributes an estimated $178.6 million worth of direct GDP or about 3.5 percent of total provincial GDP.

Ranked 4th worldwide for Advanced Software Development by KPMG, Prince Edward Island is aggressively pursuing additional Health IT companies to join a world-class cluster in the City of Summerside. It is our belief that companies in this industry thrive when given the opportunity to collaborate with peers, share training costs, and work together to influence government policy and incentive programs.

Fiber Op

The City of Summerside is deploying full fiber throughout the community to leverage the power of technology and provide, through our Electrical Infrastructure Network, a pipeline to each premise in Summerside. This bi‐directional communications network between the customer‐end’s smart devices and the electricity provider will be an open network allowing for multiple solution providers to leverage this infrastructure.

Power Storage Solutions

Through the MyPowerNet program, Summerside Electric has begun addressing the problem of energy storage solutions by encouraging residential use of electric thermal storage (ETS) units. ETS units use high‐density ceramic bricks to store heat given off by elements inside the units. The elements come on during the off‐peak nighttime to heat up the bricks, and then the stored heat is released throughout the peak day time periods as needed.

Living Lab

A Living Lab is an environment (the geographic community) in which people and technology are gathered and in which the everyday context simulates and encourages research, development, innovation and ultimately commercialization. Summerside provides both virtual and physical assets that allow enterprise/innovators to develop and deploy solutions. Our strengths are our people, infrastructure, and networks which further mutual interest in an open and collaborative way.
