Developing an Age-Friendly Future

In 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Age-Friendly Cities Initiative. Experts developed checklists that communities could follow to make them more age-friendly under eight categories:

  • housing
  • transportation
  • communications and information
  • civic participation
  • employment
  • community health
  • social participation
  • social inclusion

Summerside is one of 1,000 cities in Canada taking steps toward a more age-friendly future. During the five-year WHO process, Summerside has so far held 10 focus groups and conducted several one-on-one interviews with citizens, businesses, and city officials to assess the City. In February 2016, the City released a report with recommendations to make the City a better place to live for residents over age 55. The focus now is on carrying out projects that respond to those recommendations.

Seniors are the only growing demographic on P.E.I. This means that being age-friendly is more important than ever.
