Powering Our City

One of the most unique things about the City of Summerside is that we own our own electrical utility.

Summerside Electric purchases, sells, produces, transmits, and distributes electricity. We have more than 7,000 commercial and residential customers, and we also sell electricity to NB power.

Our electrical system is made up of:

  • The Summerside Wind Farm (with 4 wind turbines holding the capacity to generate 12 megawatts of electricity at a time)
  • The Summerside Diesel Generation Plant (which generates 12.5 megawatts of electricity at a time when needed).

Our Electrical system 46% of Summerside’s electricity comes from wind power. That is the highest percentage on the continent. On average, 20% of the time, all electricity being used in Summerside is coming from renewable wind energy.

This electricity is distributed to customers via 4,600 electric poles supporting over 111kms of circuit wires.
