SUMMERSIDE, PE - The City of Summerside is proud to announce a significant cultural investment with the signing of a five-year funding agreement with two of the city's most valued cultural institutions: the College of Piping and the Harbourfront Theatre.
This $900,000 funding agreement aims to provide long-term stability and support for the delivery of arts, heritage, and cultural programming. As a part of the City’s ongoing mandate to enrich community life and enhance cultural tourism, this initiative reinforces Summerside’s commitment to the creative and cultural vitality of the region.
“This agreement is a bold investment in our city’s soul. Arts and culture are at the heart of what makes Summerside unique, welcoming, and vibrant. By supporting the College of Piping and the Harbourfront Theatre, we are preserving our heritage, fueling the creative economy, and strengthening our tourism offerings. This partnership ensures that the cultural heartbeat of Summerside will thrive for years to come,” said Mayor Dan Kutcher.
Over the next five years, the City will disburse $180,000 annually, $90,000 each to the College of Piping and the Harbourfront Theatre, allowing both institutions to continue delivering high-quality programming, community outreach, youth engagement, and collaborative events.
“This long-term funding gives us the confidence and capacity to grow our programs, expand community access, and showcase the rich Celtic traditions that make our region so special, ” said James MacHattie, Executive Director, of the College of Piping.
The five-year agreement ensures continued delivery of:
- Performing and cultural arts programming that enhances local and visitor experiences.
- Heritage preservation and cultural education, particularly for youth.
- Tourism development by making Summerside a hub for festivals, performances, and cultural experiences.
- Community development with both organizations sharing a strong commitment to using arts and culture as powerful tools for connection, learning, and inclusion. Through year-round programs, accessible performances, and educational outreach, they engage people of all ages and backgrounds in meaningful and inclusive ways.
As part of the new funding agreement, the College of Piping and the Harbourfront Theatre have committed to working collaboratively on shared initiatives. A key focus of this partnership is the expansion of youth-based programs, with both organizations recognizing the importance of increasing access and participation among young people in arts and cultural activities.
“Harbourfront Theatre is thrilled to continue our strong partnership with the City of Summerside and the College of Piping. This agreement not only helps us deliver exceptional performing arts experiences, but also opens doors to deeper collaboration and innovation,” added Mary Dennis, Executive Director, Harbourfront Theatre.
The agreement also supports the City of Summerside’s broader goals of fostering community engagement, creative economic development, and strengthening partnerships between civic and cultural organizations.
The City encourages residents and visitors to stay tuned for upcoming joint events and initiatives born from this renewed partnership.
