City Honours Outstanding Citizens

SUMMERSIDE, PE The City of Summerside proudly recognized eight outstanding individuals for their exceptional contributions to the community at the 2025 Community Appreciation Awards, held Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans Convention Centre, Credit Union Place.

 “These awards reflect the heart and soul of Summerside—our volunteers, leaders, and neighbours who selflessly give their time, talent, and care to make our city stronger, more inclusive, and more vibrant,” said Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher. “It is truly inspiring to see the impact of these remarkable individuals who lead by example and embody the very best of our community spirit.”

 2025 Community Appreciation Award Recipients:

  •  Youth of the Year – Abbi PoirierRecognizes a young leader for exceptional volunteerism, community involvement, and resilience. Abbi’s leadership with Youth Relay for Life, Generation XX, and her compassionate outreach efforts highlight her as a role model in every sense.
  •  Frances O. Perry Memorial Award – Good Neighbour of the Year (Non-Resident) – Peter CollinsThis award honours non-residents who enhance the well-being of Summerside. Peter’s dedicated bicycle repair work with SAFE Summerside and his passion for inclusive active transportation have empowered hundreds.
  •  Veterans Recognition Award – Richard D. Milligan, CDCelebrates commitment to veteran support and remembrance. Richard’s advocacy, daily acts of kindness, and dedication to preserving veterans’ legacies are exemplary.
  •  Volunteer of the Year – Constance DuncanAcknowledges outstanding volunteerism improving lives in Summerside. Constance’s self-funded meal deliveries and essential supply distribution reflect quiet compassion and tireless service.
  •  Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion of the Year – Ron Morales- Recognizes leadership in fostering inclusion and community connection. Ron’s work with the Filipino Society has been pivotal in creating a welcoming, vibrant Summerside.
  •  George Key Sr. Citizen of the Year – Mary Dennis- Honours senior citizens who enrich community life. Mary’s 27-year leadership at Harbourfront Theatre has been vital in nurturing Summerside’s arts and cultural scene.
  •  Bill Schurman Sport and Tourism Leader of the Year Gary Barlow- Celebrates leadership in advancing sport and tourism. Gary’s contributions to national baseball and softball events and mentorship have left a lasting legacy.
  •  Mayor’s Medal of Honour – Catherine MacLellan The city’s highest civic honour, recognizing outstanding cultural contributions. Catherine’s acclaimed musical career and her dedication to community and heritage make her an inspiring ambassador for Summerside.
